In 2005, the African American community almost lost a community service icon Mr. Jim Bransford to serious health problems, which resulted in numerous surgeries, an extended hospital stay and rehabilitation.

In 2006, a group of African American men in the community believing they were given a second chance to honor Mr. Bransford (whom many he had helped) came together to honor and celebrate their hero and inspiration for his many years of extraordinary service to the community. In words “Give him, his roses now!”

Out of that event evolved the Sons of Bransford or as the men lovely titled The S.O.B. Award”. The mission was to create an annual event that identifies and honors Black men that have proven to be redeemable, responsible and resilient in overcoming the trials of life, and successful in extraordinary service to the community. And to recognize and celebrate their achievements that others can draw strength, courage, and hope from them as peaceful warriors rather than giving in to the darkness of despair and hopelessness.

"Don't strew me with roses after I'm dead. When Death claims the light of my brow No flowers of life will cheer me: instead You may give me my roses now!" -Thomas F. Healey
